Brighton Dome

 Brighton, England

Van was absolutely sensational tonight in Brighton, UK. My memory might be playing tricks on me but I think that might be the best I’ve heard his voice: the pandemic rested his voice and his enthusiasm (and got him fired up!). Superb versions of “I’m Carrying a Torch” “C
leaning Windows”, and "Real Real Gone". Had the crowd in ecstasy and jubilation several times: "Days Like This" popular and the song from Belfast, "Down to Joy", was very good new material. Band on great form. I couldn’t stop smiling and laughing out loud at times at how enjoyable it all was. Thanks Van. Still very much got it.

Van Morrison has been combining elements of Celtic music, improvise jazz and rhythm & blues for more than 30 years, born in Belfast he’s a legend and a revered musician. Last year he was knighted and inducted into the “Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame” and even has a star on the ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame’. He has won six Grammys, a BRIT award for Outstanding Contribution and Ivor Novello award for lifetime achievement. His latest studio album is number 42 and he has seven live albums, nine compilation albums, six video albums and 80 Single releases to his name.

Tonight at the Brighton Dome was the first of two consecutive night appearances and the band came on stage at 7:30pm for a warmup and played a couple of pieces and then disappeared until Van Morrison came on at 8:10pm. He was wearing his now expected, dark suit, hat and aviator sunglasses, for a 76-year-old he seemed pretty good.

He launched into the set with four songs from his current double CD album ‘Latest Record Project 1’. Those songs being: ‘Latest Record Project’, ‘Deadbeat Saturday Night’, ‘Double Agent’ and ‘Up County Down’.

With his new songs out of the way he then started to concentrate on his back catalogue, first one out of the blocks was ‘Days Like This’ and a superb version of ‘Have I Told You Lately’. Throughout the performance band members were given an opportunity to express the music with Morrison pointing to each of them in turn. The seven piece band were first class musicians and were able to follow Morrisons lead without any difficulty, keyboard, guitar, drums, saxophone, bass guitar, percussion and xylophone.

He was able to switch styles so easily from jazz, soul, country, blues and swing. His performance came to life about half way through with the 1930s blues number, recorded by ‘Them’ in 1964 ‘Baby, Please Don’t Go’. For a while the room was rocking as he combined it with ‘Got My Mojo Working’ and ‘I Can Tell’. It was time to change the mood with ‘Sometimes We Cry’ and ‘Real Real Gone’. Another highlight was his excellent rendition of ‘Into The Mystic’.

Towards the end of the gig, he became rather more animated when he sang ‘Coming Down To Joy’ almost dancing at one point! As you would expect, the end of the set started with ‘Brown Eye Girl’ and a lively version of ‘Gloria’ which had the audience singing (despite most of us wearing masks). During the performance Morrison hardly spoke to the audience and then walked off stage during ‘Gloria’, leaving the band to play for a further 10 minutes by themselves.

There is no doubt that Van Morrison is a great singer songwriter and performed some amazing music during this concert as well as a talented saxophonist. However, I have to commend the band who I believe we’re truly exceptional musicians and it’s clear that Morrison selected the best to accompany him.

The legendary Irish star played a mix of new songs and classics He may have held some controversial views over Covid-19 and lockdowns but Van Morrison had a pretty productive pandemic.

Last year, he released his 42nd album, Latest Record Project Volume 1, and he has been back on the road since restrictions were lifted. At 76, there’s still no stopping this Irish singing legend after six decades of performing.

Backed by a seven-piece band, Morrison appeared on the stroke of 8pm as planned and the show ran for 90 minutes - with the best seats in the 2,000-seat venue costing £80, that’s not a bad hourly rate and it’s no wonder Morrison’s microphone and saxophone are gold-plated.

Morrison fans have come to expect the unexpected at his live show. He famously works without a set list and only tells the well-rehearsed band which song he wants to play next when the previous one ends.

Such spontaneity makes for an exhilarating spectacle for the fans but, one imagines, less so for the musicians who have to know around 300 of Morrison’s songs just in case he decides to sing them.

I’ve been watching Morrison live for around 25 years - half the time of many of his older fans - and you never know what kind of mood the curmudgeonly singer is in until he starts the set.

Morrison was keen for his loyal fans to hear a few choice cuts from the new album at the Hippodrome on Monday night.

The first four numbers were from Latest Record Project Volume 1, including the ridiculously catchy County Down.

New songs out of the way, it was then pretty much back-to-back classics for the next 70 minutes, starting with mid-90s favourite Days Like This and the 1930s blues song Baby, Please Don’t Go, made famous by Morrison and his band Them in 1964.

Effortlessly switching styles, what followed was a carousel of jazz, soul, country blues and swing, from Magic Time and Broken Record to Precious Time and Ain’t Gonna Moan No More.

There will be a few fans who felt short-changed that he didn’t dust off songs like Moondance and Wild Night, but compensation came in the form of a truly mesmerising version of Into The Mystic, which sounds as good today as it did in 1970. It’s a solid gold classic.

A rare outing for the beautiful Foreign Window (from 1986’s brilliant album No Guru, No Method, No Teacher) was followed by Cleaning Windows, which morphed into Gene Vincent’s Be Bop a Lula.

But for me it was a sprawling version of In The Afternoon that was worth the price of the ticket alone.

By the end of the song, the lights were turned so low that the only things shining were reflections from the illuminated music stands in Morrison’s aviator shades.

As is now tradition at Morrison gigs, the set ended with Brown Eyed Girl and a rousing Gloria, both of which had the audience singing when the spotlights were turned full blast on the stalls.

Morrison, who had barely said a word or acknowledged the audience all evening, walked off during the final song to let the musicians play for a further ten minutes.

He didn’t return and the lights came up. The legend had left the building, job done, enigma intact. And we wouldn’t want it any other way.
