Brendan Hynes Sends in His Thoughts on Gig #1 in London
The first night of Van Morrison's five night residency at this newly opened venue commenced with a short support act consisting of Mitch Wood on piano and Anthony Paule on electric guitar. When Mitch announced that both of them were also part of Van's band it was immediately obvious that Van's performance would include several songs from the Someone Tried To Sell Me A Bridge album which both of them played on and so it proved with the opening four songs performed taken from the album. The pick of these to my ears was Snatch It Back And Hold It with the band in full flight and Van playing some fine harmonica. The first of Van's own songs was Down to Joy which featured some fine vocals from the three backing singers. Moondance was a reworked version which drew comparison with the George Benson sound and featured a fine piano solo by Mitch Woods. Ain't Gonna Moan No More brought us back into blues territory while Green Rocky Road from the Skiffle album followed before we received some Enlightenment from Van. Tore Down A La Rimbaud was a welcome set inclusion although there was some turbulence at the start resulting in Van instructing the band to play the intro again. Van then announced a song from the Back On Top album which was Goin' Down Geneva which led into a lively Brand New Cadillac.

Dweller On the Threshold was a particular highlight and got a big audience ovation. Early In the Mornin' featured multiple solos by band members and was followed by Real Real Gone/ You Send Me which featured lovely vocals from the backing singers once more. After Van had introduced the band members for a second time he departed the stage somewhat prematurely which led to the band's opening notes of the Gloria encore quickly being replaced by Into The Mystic presumably because Van had realised that his self imposed curfew had not yet been reached and he had time on his hands!! Gloria did eventually close the show with John Allair on organ particularly enjoying himself!
