Sean checks in with Nashville Night 2
"CHECKING IT OUT IN REAL TIME"
Another expansive, explosive night in Nashville. Van featured 9 different songs from the previous evening. My Time After A While was a heartbreaking personal reflection with the touching line "I just want to see my darling children smile." Both this song and Days Like This that followed featured aggressive fluttering sax work from Van. Satisfied was epic tonight with Van deep in the groove and sent into a fit of bent over chuckling in response to the richness of the feeling. Before launching into And it Stoned Me Van mentioned it was the 130th Anniversary of the Ryman Auditorium and offered his congratulations.

Next up was a sweet treat of Full Force Gale. Raincheck was again delivered as a personal statement of resolve and determination. Van cut the Baby Please medley short to get to the song he really wanted to sing which was a blistering version of Think Twice Before You Go. Then in tribute to the hallowed surroundings Van sang I Can't Stop Loving You and a wonderfully expressive What Am I Living For? Ain't Gonna Moan was a tribute to the masters of vocalese sung by a master himself. The audience got a kick out of Broken Record.

The stage was set for a thrilling finale with a heartfelt In The Midnight. The sprawling workshop In The Afternoon went down numerous highways and byways with Van communing with the audience about the miles of coastline and golden sand by repeating a new lyric "Checking it out in Real Time" which he repeated again and again. Into The Mystic sparked instant recognition and appreciation.

Down to Joy concluded the main set with fervor and passion as Van thanked the crowd and walked off into the wings. The traditional finale followed with two crowd pleasers. Van thanked the crowd again and mentioned how great it was to be back in Nashville. The players got to show off their skills with wonderful solos.

A special note about how the entire proceedings every night are anchored by David Hayes bass sounding like God's thunder. Van's joyous approach to the music was illustrated by his punching the air in every direction. Eight shows in to this extended run each performance has been a master class. Onto the Windy City with 2 days of well deserved rest.

Sean sends in his thoughts on Ryman gig night 1
A rapturous standing ovation from a keyed up Ryman audience greeted Van before he blew or sang a note. Up County Down was a syncopated wonder. Van sprang an early surprise by bringing on Joss Stone for a popping, jumping Someone Like You. Her voice soaring over Van's vocal created a beautiful fusion. The big surprise of the night came next with Van and Joss reprising their version of Wild Honey from the underrated Duets album. This version surpassed the studio version. Van took the song down into a low moan that he held and then went into a repetition of the word "the light" that was endlessly glowing. A fist pump and a loud "yeah" from Van showed how much he enjoyed the interaction with Joss as she exited to great applause.

Up next was a slow, sultry funkified Satisfied. The band and Van laying down a righteous groove that was powerfully on point. John Allair got to shine as Van said "Shall we do, shall we do, organ grinder jam? The Moondance nuggets And it Stoned Me and These Dreams of You featured classic John Platania solos. Raincheck continues to be delivered with a heartfelt power. The band exuded a big enveloping sound all night with Chris White providing numerous dynamic horn solos. The audience, Van and the band then rocked through the Baby Please medley and Think Twice Before You Go which got the full John Lee Hooker treatment.

Van then mentioned that he'd done a country album but couldn't recall when it came out. He did a song he wrote for the project called This Has Got To Stop that featured a great pedal steel solo from Dave Keary. A sweet Enlightenment slowed things down a bit along with a beautifully delivered Carrying a Torch that let everyone catch their collective breath. A crowd pleasing Cleaning Windows with followed.

Van has turned Down to Joy into an epic emotional life affirming statement. Van closed the show out with the usual Help Me, BEG and a joyous Gloria in which the band shines with a new arrangement to the extended instrumental coda. Another powerhouse performance from an artist and his band that continues to evolve and gel with stunning energy.

Brendan on 2nd night in London
Night Two
Chris Farlowe once more filled the support slot and really seemed to enjoy his time in the limelight as he at one point addressed the rhetorical question "He's not a bad singer is he,?" to the audience! His set was the same as on the previous night.

From the outset Van appeared to be somewhat more energised than on the previous night He commenced with similar song choices but with Have I Told You Lately (with a strong vocal contribution from Elle Cato) included instead of Up County Down.Chris Farlowe once more joined Van starting with Mr DJ which worked really well and featured a deep voice contribution of the song title from guitarist Dave Keary which greatly amused Van. Stormy Monday/ Take Your Hand Out Of My Pocket was really good with Van and Chris trading lines and verses and Dave Keary providing a terrific guitar solo. I Can Tell increased the tempo while Cleaning Windows benefited considerably from the subtle saxophone playing of Chris White in the background.

And It Stoned Me and These Dreams of You were reprised once more much to the delight of the audience while Sometimes We Cry was very strong and featured Elle Cato to great effect once more. The opening notes of In the Afternoon prompted the necessity for the audience to fasten their collective seatbelts as Van transported us not only down the ancient highway but also on this occasion along the coastline on an extended mystical journey with the stage shrouded in darkness and the band sound level reduced to a minimal one apart from Elle Cato whose background vocals supplemented Van's beautifully. This was the clear highlight of the night for me as the audience sat in mesmerised silence throughout its delivery.

The encore was limited to Gloria tonight with Chris Farlowe joining Van once more. The band did excellent extended solos following Van's departure with Elle Cato bringing the house down with her stupendous and seemingly near impossible vocal range while Teena Lyle in particular also got a huge response to her percussion acrobatics. It was notable that the response from the audience was more audible tonight which probably reflected the higher level of performance compared to the first night.

Night One
Chris Farlowe got proceedings under way with a short set backed by Van's full band and the set included covers of songs by Bobby Bland and Solomon Burke before finishing with what Chris emphasised was the original version of Handbags and Gladrags as recorded by him.

Van's set commenced with the instrumental Caledonia Swing (no doubt inspired by its inclusion on the Belfast film soundtrack) before being followed as has become the norm by three songs from Latest Record Project including the title track. Days Like This was followed by the first real highlight in Someone Like You and while the speeded up jazzy 'Las Vegas' style version did few favours to the song, Elle Cato's magnificent vocals certainly did with her voice complementing Van's superbly. I Forgot That Love Existed was a welcome inclusion after which Chris Farlowe joined Van for a quick fire trio of songs namely Hey Mr.DJ, Stormy Monday (featuring an excellent Dave Keary guitar solo) and Born to Sing. It was good to hear And It Stoned Me and These Dreams of You which have recently been included in set lists. Carrying a Torch was a standout song which once more featured Elle Cato to great effect. Following the ending of Dead Or Alive, which Van seemed unhappy with, he shouted 'Healing Game' to the band in response to an earlier audience request for the song but he sadly abandoned it following the intro without singing a word while informing the audience that the band didn't know how to play it. This caused much disappointment among attendees who were elated at the opportunity of hearing this classic song in concert only to have it removed so abruptly. Maybe next time? The show then ended rather predictably with Down To Joy, Help Me and the encore of Brown Eyed Girl and Gloria bringing it to a conclusion.

Van Morrison delights nostalgics with a recital without buts at the Coliseum British musician Van Morrison arrived at the Coliseum yesterday to give an expected concert that had to be postponed last December for reasons of the artist's health. The Lion of Belfast, who had not visited the city for 22 years, reviewed his repertoire of classic songs and also some more recent ones.

Arriving from the Wizink Center in Madrid, the musician went on stage at 8:28 p.m. - many had not yet had time to take their seats - and began the sax recital with the instrumental "Caledonia swing" to continue with "Latest record project" and “Up county down”.

Accompanied by a six-piece jazz club band and a backing vocalist, Morrison did not He left no time for chatting or jokes and went about his business, practically without a pause between songs.

There were hardly any interactions with the public, although he was cheered on numerous times, one of them when his first big hit came, "Days like this", where the artist scored one of his solos.

Vocal brilliance
With "Someone like you" the public cheered with the palms. Van Morrison, who also excelled in ballads like “Sometimes we cry” -after which he delivered a single “thank you”-, stood out with a great crooner's voice over music that gave him all the prominence.

“Baby, please don't go” made him take out the harmonica and with two other of his greatest hits, “Brown eyed girl” and “Gloria”, the Coliseum danced and sang at the end of the party, with a Morrison who, educated , he said goodbye with another “thank you”. Genius, figure and a delight for nostalgics.

Mail BD (Source vis Google Translate)
There are geniuses who will never give up being figures. Van Morrison is passing through 76 autumns, a rather important age, but he does not seem willing to modify his most sacrosanct customs or to sweeten his character. In their long-awaited visit to Madrid’s WiZink, delayed a year and a half between pandemics and various ailments, the musicians appear at 8:29 p.m. to welcome their leader at 8:30 p.m. with the precision of an atomic clock. From then on, the magic will show up only intermittently, but absolutely stunning when it happens. And, oh, what would become of us and of life without those little moments, without those flashes of fullness in which, as we know from Days Like This“the pieces of the puzzle seem as if they are starting to fit together”.

Skepticism is very lawful, for the record. And the Northern Irishman has not stopped offering reasons for it lately. The seven albums that he has been stringing together since 2016, all of them very long and even one double, are no more than very pleasant catalogs of soul and blues as impeccable as they are scarce in relief. misanthropy —when not antipathy— that distill some lyrics of Latest Record Project, his 2021 album, are a difficult dish to eat. And even more creepy is produced by his proud pandemic denialism, with which he can no longer be considered a grumpy man, but a boozer. And with all of that said, just listening to the memorable versions of And It Stoned Me or cleaning windows who left us on Tuesday would already have been worth our journey through this valley of smiles and tears.

It is curious that a man so harsh, hieratic and distant has turned the whole of his work into a pure balm. The Healing Game, like the title of one of her most lovable albums, encompassed classics that are now in their fifties (Baby Please Don’t Go), old-school superlative readings (Got My Mojo Workingthat I Can Tell by Bo Diddley), favorites of the new century (Magic Time, Precious Time) and even cathartic duets with her vocalist, the notable and little-known Elle Cato, to whom she allows a fair share of protagonism for the wonderful Someone Like You and Carrying a Torch.

But Morrison, we’ve known forever, He is not a friend of making things easy. It opens with four recent and barely known (although double-agent have all the chicha of his substantial writing), considerably limits the torrent of decibels and, of course, renounces any giant screen that makes it easier for the 5,400 attendees to contemplate what is happening on stage. The scenery is equal to zero and the lighting is static (with that, not with X). Oh, don’t look for great aristocrats among your seven companions either, but rather hard-working and skilled artists. It’s not that the times of Georgie Fame and Pee Wee Ellis are already remote; is that we can’t even take comfort in a Joey DeFrancesco.

AND despite everything, ladies and gentlemen, the thing works. The first big hit of the night, Days Like Thisbursts into a reinvented and even reharmonized reading, but not unrecognizable, like that man from Duluth you are thinking of. Someone Like Younocturnal and velvety when we met her in 1988, accelerates at the stroke of swing. And the glory (or GLORY) we end up caressing when it starts And It Stoned Methe opening theme of moon dance (1970), which our beloved George Ivan had not included in the repertoire for centuries.

During those minutes, word, the spirit of the Caledonia Soul Orchestra, perhaps the best accompanying band that times have known, gravitates between the foundations of the pavilion. It is not a lasting sensation, because the one from Belfast is in charge of dynamiting bridges with the public, tenacious in his refusal to greet, to the brief “hello”, to a tiny gesture of complicity. With him, our expectations are always as high as the roots of his racanería. Because there are dozens of songs that we would have killed to listen to and they weren’t there and they weren’t expected. Because we know in advance that he will exit at twenty-two zero zero, with the precision of an Olympic stopwatch. And because we refused to count the additional 10 minutes that their musicians granted us as final entertainment, in what almost seemed like a formula to promote staggered evacuation.

Those who treated him say that the author of Astral Weeks has gained in cordiality, at least within its parameters. He has shed 15 kilos from himself and on Tuesday, after solving the sound check in a sigh, he spent the afternoon peacefully lounging in a WiZink dressing room. Of course, he is no longer that feline that roared in the imperishable Listen To The Lion, half a century ago now, but just about any singer on the planet would swoon over a voice like Van Morrison’s in 2022. And yes, he still makes us cringe when he blows that rough, asthmatic sax that defies any academy. That’s why we don’t know whether to thank him eternally for the moments of ecstasy or to move, uncomfortable, when he activates the autopilot without too much dissimulation.

To add insult to injury, the 19th song of the night, down to joyreminded us that this preciousness for the film Belfast had succumbed at the Oscars against Billie Eilish’s candidacy, making good the classic comparisons between gods and brothers-in-law. That really was a bad joke, and not the one with the slap. There remains the consolation of suspecting that the interested party will have been the one least affected by the verdict, according to his detachment from worldly circumstances.

We are not going to change him at this point: enough that he compromises to finish with his two most iconic titles, brown eyed girl and Glory, with moderate affection and even briefly illuminating the track to corroborate the joy of the parish. Richard Dunn’s old Hammond organ crackled to lead the way for guitarist Dave Keary, once musical director of Lord Of The Dance. And the poor mortals, what the hell, we smiled. Oh, friend Van: if it weren’t for these little moments.

Van was absolutely sensational tonight in Brighton, UK. My memory might be playing tricks on me but I think that might be the best I’ve heard his voice: the pandemic rested his voice and his enthusiasm (and got him fired up!). Superb versions of “I’m Carrying a Torch” “C
leaning Windows”, and "Real Real Gone". Had the crowd in ecstasy and jubilation several times: "Days Like This" popular and the song from Belfast, "Down to Joy", was very good new material. Band on great form. I couldn’t stop smiling and laughing out loud at times at how enjoyable it all was. Thanks Van. Still very much got it.

Van Morrison has been combining elements of Celtic music, improvise jazz and rhythm & blues for more than 30 years, born in Belfast he’s a legend and a revered musician. Last year he was knighted and inducted into the “Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame” and even has a star on the ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame’. He has won six Grammys, a BRIT award for Outstanding Contribution and Ivor Novello award for lifetime achievement. His latest studio album is number 42 and he has seven live albums, nine compilation albums, six video albums and 80 Single releases to his name.

Tonight at the Brighton Dome was the first of two consecutive night appearances and the band came on stage at 7:30pm for a warmup and played a couple of pieces and then disappeared until Van Morrison came on at 8:10pm. He was wearing his now expected, dark suit, hat and aviator sunglasses, for a 76-year-old he seemed pretty good.

He launched into the set with four songs from his current double CD album ‘Latest Record Project 1’. Those songs being: ‘Latest Record Project’, ‘Deadbeat Saturday Night’, ‘Double Agent’ and ‘Up County Down’.

With his new songs out of the way he then started to concentrate on his back catalogue, first one out of the blocks was ‘Days Like This’ and a superb version of ‘Have I Told You Lately’. Throughout the performance band members were given an opportunity to express the music with Morrison pointing to each of them in turn. The seven piece band were first class musicians and were able to follow Morrisons lead without any difficulty, keyboard, guitar, drums, saxophone, bass guitar, percussion and xylophone.

He was able to switch styles so easily from jazz, soul, country, blues and swing. His performance came to life about half way through with the 1930s blues number, recorded by ‘Them’ in 1964 ‘Baby, Please Don’t Go’. For a while the room was rocking as he combined it with ‘Got My Mojo Working’ and ‘I Can Tell’. It was time to change the mood with ‘Sometimes We Cry’ and ‘Real Real Gone’. Another highlight was his excellent rendition of ‘Into The Mystic’.

Towards the end of the gig, he became rather more animated when he sang ‘Coming Down To Joy’ almost dancing at one point! As you would expect, the end of the set started with ‘Brown Eye Girl’ and a lively version of ‘Gloria’ which had the audience singing (despite most of us wearing masks). During the performance Morrison hardly spoke to the audience and then walked off stage during ‘Gloria’, leaving the band to play for a further 10 minutes by themselves.

There is no doubt that Van Morrison is a great singer songwriter and performed some amazing music during this concert as well as a talented saxophonist. However, I have to commend the band who I believe we’re truly exceptional musicians and it’s clear that Morrison selected the best to accompany him.

The legendary Irish star played a mix of new songs and classics He may have held some controversial views over Covid-19 and lockdowns but Van Morrison had a pretty productive pandemic.

Last year, he released his 42nd album, Latest Record Project Volume 1, and he has been back on the road since restrictions were lifted. At 76, there’s still no stopping this Irish singing legend after six decades of performing.

Backed by a seven-piece band, Morrison appeared on the stroke of 8pm as planned and the show ran for 90 minutes - with the best seats in the 2,000-seat venue costing £80, that’s not a bad hourly rate and it’s no wonder Morrison’s microphone and saxophone are gold-plated.

Morrison fans have come to expect the unexpected at his live show. He famously works without a set list and only tells the well-rehearsed band which song he wants to play next when the previous one ends.

Such spontaneity makes for an exhilarating spectacle for the fans but, one imagines, less so for the musicians who have to know around 300 of Morrison’s songs just in case he decides to sing them.

I’ve been watching Morrison live for around 25 years - half the time of many of his older fans - and you never know what kind of mood the curmudgeonly singer is in until he starts the set.

Morrison was keen for his loyal fans to hear a few choice cuts from the new album at the Hippodrome on Monday night.

The first four numbers were from Latest Record Project Volume 1, including the ridiculously catchy County Down.

New songs out of the way, it was then pretty much back-to-back classics for the next 70 minutes, starting with mid-90s favourite Days Like This and the 1930s blues song Baby, Please Don’t Go, made famous by Morrison and his band Them in 1964.

Effortlessly switching styles, what followed was a carousel of jazz, soul, country blues and swing, from Magic Time and Broken Record to Precious Time and Ain’t Gonna Moan No More.

There will be a few fans who felt short-changed that he didn’t dust off songs like Moondance and Wild Night, but compensation came in the form of a truly mesmerising version of Into The Mystic, which sounds as good today as it did in 1970. It’s a solid gold classic.

A rare outing for the beautiful Foreign Window (from 1986’s brilliant album No Guru, No Method, No Teacher) was followed by Cleaning Windows, which morphed into Gene Vincent’s Be Bop a Lula.

But for me it was a sprawling version of In The Afternoon that was worth the price of the ticket alone.

By the end of the song, the lights were turned so low that the only things shining were reflections from the illuminated music stands in Morrison’s aviator shades.

As is now tradition at Morrison gigs, the set ended with Brown Eyed Girl and a rousing Gloria, both of which had the audience singing when the spotlights were turned full blast on the stalls.

Morrison, who had barely said a word or acknowledged the audience all evening, walked off during the final song to let the musicians play for a further ten minutes.

He didn’t return and the lights came up. The legend had left the building, job done, enigma intact. And we wouldn’t want it any other way.

Brian's thoughts on Derry night 1
I attended my first Van show in several years on a whim, having made a late decision to attend just the night before. The tickets came courtesy of a kindly list member, Darren O'Beirne, who offered two front row seats at face value (did I mention front row seats?). I had no real expectations about what I was going to get from Van and was very pleasantly surprised. I’ve seen him enough (hundreds of times since the 70”s) to know a good performance when I see one.

Onto the show, we caught the opening act, Dea Matrona and I really liked them. They are an up-and-coming trio of young girls. They’re not the finished article, but I think they’ve got the potential to break out.

Van came on promptly at 8 and delivered a fast-paced bluesy, jazzy be-bop set and I LOVED it. He was on and engaged and while the setlist was not what I personally might have chosen, it was really well constructed as a performance and entity. Without going through the setlist which others have posted, he started off with a bunch of songs from his Latest Record Project. Having heard them on CD and Spotify I couldn’t believe the difference (Improvement) in the songs when performed live. Van belted out the tunes with the backing of his slick and professional band. If i had my druthers, I could've used a little guitar from Van (he didn't pick one up) but there was some absolutely stellar harp work.

Am I mistaken, or is Van’s voice getting better? This is no tribute act or band, this is a singer in command of his god given talents with a great set of musicians supporting him. Even the much derided Broken Record worked really well in this environment. The set was over all too soon for me, but I left feeling the whole rushed effort to get to see the show was wholly worthwhile. So, thanks once again Darren O'Beirne for the “nudge” to attend, and thanks to Van Morrison. My advice, if you stick to songwriting and performing music, you can’t go wrong and you’ll have a great career. I’m back on the train. A big hand for the band!

Ps did I mention I got to witness all of this from the front row? Couldn’t take my eyes off of Van but unfortunately couldn’t see the lovely Teena Lyle or Elle Cato although I did catch Teena’s “Swim” dance when standing for the encore.
